Using a good liquid biological laundry soap on the lower part (not the skin) of white tails helps to remove staining from mud.

Keeping your horse well sprayed with a good coat sheen helps to prevent mud staining,especially on greys.

Using a chalk block on legs of greys the night before a show will help stains brush off next morning but don't forget to include it in your show stuff next day. You're sure to need it in emergencies before going in the ring!

Use a neck strap as a safety handle to grab hold of when you're caught off balance. Its better than jabbing your horse in the mouth.
